Summary of Main Responsibilities

Since 1989, the Planning and Building functions for the Town have been operating under the Development Services Department and corresponding Committee, reporting to the Department Head.  The primary purpose for this arrangement was to create a "one stop shopping" approach to development approvals, from initial contact through Planning approvals, building approvals, completion and occupancy.  The secondary benefit was a clearer reporting and accountability structure to the Administrator, Committee and Council.

 

A healthy community begins with a healthy environment.  The Development Services department serves the citizens of the Town of Bracebridgeby ensuring that current and future development is compatible with the physical, environmental and economic capacity of the Town of Bracebridge.  As well, the Department ensures that new construction is carried out with properly issued building permits and that all new construction meets the standards of the Ontario Building Code Act and Regulations.

  • Local Official Plan Policy & Amendment
  • Zoning By-laws & Amendments
  • Severances & Minor Variances
  • Confirmation of Policies & regulation as they relate to land use in the Town
  • Plans of Subdivision - review & agreements

The Building Code Act

  • Enforcement of the Ontario Building Code
  • Building By-law & Building, Heating, Plumbing & Demolition Permits
  • Change of Use Permits
  • Part VIII Sewage Disposal Systems
  • Septic System Re-inspection

The Municipal Act

  • Sign By-law Implementation
  • Swimming Pool Fence By-law & Permits
  • Pits & Quarries Control By-law
  • Tent & Trailer By-law
  • 911 Numbering By-law

The Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001

  • Accessibility Advisory Committee

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

  • Forms of mapping available for purchase or the creation of mapping (subject to conditions)

For all of these functions, the Department is responsible for inquiries, preparation, review, maintenance, monitoring, updating and amendment, interpretation & compliance comments, inspection and enforcement.
